BUYING GUIDE / ATTACHMENTS & WEAR PARTS

How to choose
excavator bucket teeth.

Match the installed tooth system, choose a profile for the job and prepare a clearer replacement enquiry.

Start with the adapter — not the excavator brand.

A bucket may have been replaced or modified. Machine brand, excavator weight and tooth appearance alone cannot confirm compatibility. Identify the tooth, adapter and retention system before ordering.

01 / APPLICATION

Compare tooth profiles for your ground conditions.

Names and designs vary by supplier and system. These are broad selection considerations, not a guarantee of performance or a specification for every product.

Typical selection considerations
ProfileApplications to discussMain trade-offConfirm before ordering
General-purpose / standardSoil, sand, clay and mixed diggingA balance between penetration and wear allowanceActual profile, compatible adapter and working material
Rock / abrasion-orientedAbrasive or rocky conditions, where the selected design is suitableExtra wear material may change penetration and machine loadingDesign suitability, material evidence and impact conditions
Tiger / penetration-orientedCompacted material and applications needing a narrower tipA pointed profile can trade wear allowance for penetration; inspect for tip wear and breakageWhether the system permits this profile and the intended application

No fixed service-life multiplier, fuel-saving percentage or steel grade should be assumed from the profile name alone.

02 / COMPATIBILITY

Identify the installed tooth system.

Brand-family references such as CAT J-Series, ESCO systems or other designs can help start a search. They are not cross-reference or interchangeability approvals. Use the installed assembly, exact size and documented references to confirm the enquiry.

What to identifyEvidence to provideWhy it matters
Tooth and adapter referencesReadable markings, original order records, drawings or part numbersThe machine’s original brand may not identify the current bucket system
Adapter nose / tooth pocketClean photos from multiple sides and measured interface dimensionsA similar exterior does not establish fitment
Pin, lock and retainerPart references, orientation and photos of the retaining componentsRetention components must match the intended system
System size and versionDocumented size, revision and dimensional confirmationDo not treat different manufacturers’ size labels as equivalents

Excavator weight is supporting information, not the final size rule.

Do not select J200, J300 or another system size solely from machine tonnage. Bucket design, installed adapters, load and application must also be reviewed. This guide deliberately does not provide a CAT-to-ESCO equivalence table.

Brand names are identification references only and do not imply authorisation, affiliation or original-equipment supply.

03 / DECISION PROCESS

A practical five-step selection process.

  1. Identify the installed assembly. Record the tooth, adapter and lock references. Include photos and dimensions if the references are unknown.
  2. Describe the working material. Specify soil, clay, gravel, rock, mixed material, abrasiveness and typical impact conditions.
  3. Discuss the profile. Compare penetration requirements with available wear material and the system’s permitted designs.
  4. Confirm the exact fit and duty. Review interface drawings, retention components, system size and application. Machine tonnage is an additional check, not proof of fitment.
  5. Agree supply and acceptance. Specify whether teeth, pins, locks and adapters are included; confirm quantity, inspection evidence and order-specific support terms.

04 / PROCUREMENT QUALITY

Compare evidence, not just price or photographs.

  • Agree critical dimensions and fitment acceptance criteria.
  • Request material and heat-treatment information relevant to the specific product; verify claimed reports and batch traceability.
  • Where appropriate, agree hardness and impact-test methods and acceptance values. A hardness number alone does not prove toughness or field life.
  • For an unfamiliar source or design, consider a technically reviewed sample or trial order before a larger purchase.
  • Agree the defect reporting process, evidence required and replacement responsibilities in writing. No blanket warranty is promised by this guide.

05 / IN SERVICE

Inspect wear and retention before they become a bigger issue.

  • Follow the equipment and tooth-system instructions for safe isolation, removal and installation. Keep clear of unsupported equipment and stored energy.
  • Inspect teeth, adapters, pins and locks at the intervals specified for the system and duty; increase checks where operating conditions require it.
  • Replace worn or damaged teeth before wear exceeds the system’s limits or damages the adapter.
  • Do not reuse damaged retention components. Follow the system’s replacement and installation requirements.
  • Reposition or rotate teeth only where the tooth-system instructions permit it; not all positions or profiles are interchangeable.
  • Keep identified spares for planned servicing. Whether to replace individual teeth or a full set depends on wear condition and system guidance.

This is a procurement guide, not an installation manual. Obtain the instructions for the exact system and use qualified personnel where required.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order by excavator brand and weight?

These details help identify the enquiry but cannot confirm the installed tooth system. Supply the exact component references and interface evidence.

Can I change from standard to tiger or rock teeth?

Only after confirming an approved profile for the exact installed system and suitable application. Do not assume the same size label makes different systems interchangeable.

Will a rock profile always last longer?

No fixed result can be promised. Design, material, heat treatment, working conditions and operation all affect field performance.
