Scissor Lift Buying Guide: Choose the Right Lift for Your Worksite

Scissor lifts provide a stable elevated platform for maintenance, installation and construction tasks. Choosing the right one depends on working height, platform size, terrain and power source.

Electric vs Diesel Scissor Lifts

  • Electric (battery) — Zero emissions, low noise. Best for indoor work, warehouses, retail fit-outs and facilities maintenance. Smooth floors only.
  • Diesel / rough terrain — Higher ground clearance, four-wheel drive, oscillating axle. For outdoor construction, uneven ground and slopes. Requires ventilation if used indoors.

Key Specifications to Match

  • Platform height — Maximum height the platform reaches. Working height adds approximately 2 m for the operator’s reach.
  • Platform size — Length and width of the work area. Consider how many workers and what tools/materials will be on the platform.
  • Lift capacity — Maximum weight the platform can carry, including workers, tools and materials.
  • Stowed dimensions — Width and height when folded. Must fit through doorways and transport height restrictions.
  • Weight — Floor loading capacity matters for indoor use on raised floors or decking.

Safety and Compliance

Ensure the scissor lift meets local safety standards (ANSI A92, EN 280 or equivalent). Operators must be trained and certified. Regular inspections of hydraulics, electrical systems, guardrails, and emergency lowering systems are mandatory.
