Excavator Ripper vs Ripper Tooth: Application and Selection Guide
Rippers and ripper teeth serve different purposes on an excavator. Understanding the distinction helps you choose correctly.
Excavator Ripper
A ripper is a single-tooth attachment that mounts to the stick in place of a bucket. It breaks hard ground, frozen soil, soft rock, asphalt and compacted material using the machine’s breakout force.
Ripper Tooth
A ripper tooth is the replaceable wearing point on a ripper or bulldozer shank. When it wears down, you replace only the tooth, not the entire ripper assembly.
When to Use a Ripper
- Breaking rock too hard for bucket digging but too soft for blasting
- Ripping frozen ground before trenching
- Removing old asphalt, concrete slabs and compacted fill
- Loosening stumps, roots and buried debris
Match the ripper to your machine’s weight class and pin dimensions. Confirm mounting pin diameter, centre distance and ear width.
