Bucket Teeth Identification: How to Find Your Replacement
Excavator and loader bucket teeth wear down over time. Replacing them promptly maintains digging efficiency and protects the bucket lip. The challenge is identifying the correct tooth system. This guide walks you through it.
Major Tooth Systems
- J-Series (CAT-style) — Hammerless pin-and-retainer lock. Part numbers include J200, J300, J350, J400, J460, J550.
- K-Series (Komatsu-style) — Rubber lock or bolt-on retainer. Designations include K30, K40, K50.
- V-Series (ESCO-style) — Hammerless flex-pin system. Designations include V13, V17, V19, V23, V29, V33.
- H&L-style — Pin-and-lock mechanism common in older and smaller equipment.
How to Identify Your Current Tooth
- Check for cast or stamped part numbers on the tooth body or adapter.
- Measure the adapter: width across top, height from base to tip, lock pocket dimensions.
- Identify the lock type: hammerless flex pin, rubber lock, bolt-on, or spring pin.
- Photograph the worn tooth and adapter from the side and top.
When to Replace
Replace teeth when the wear line reaches the adapter face, when cracks appear, or when breakout force noticeably increases. Running past the adapter exposes the lip to direct wear.
