Wheel Loader Bucket Selection by Material and Capacity
Selecting the right wheel loader bucket depends on the material you handle and the loader’s rated capacity. An oversized bucket creates safety risks; an undersized one wastes cycles. This guide helps you match the bucket to the job.
Bucket Types by Application
- General purpose — Flat floor, straight cutting edge. Suitable for loose soil, sand, gravel and aggregate.
- Rock bucket — Reinforced floor and side plates, bolt-on teeth. For blasted rock, demolition debris and abrasive materials.
- Light material bucket — Larger volume, lighter construction. For mulch, snow, woodchips and grain.
- Side-dump bucket — Hydraulic side-tipping. For backfilling trenches and loading in confined areas.
How Capacity Is Rated
Bucket capacity is rated in cubic metres or cubic yards at either struck (level fill) or heaped (2:1 angle of repose). The heaped number is always larger. Check which standard your supplier quotes — mixing the two leads to undersizing.
Key Fitment Dimensions
- Machine model and linkage type (Z-bar, TP, parallel)
- Pin diameters and centre spacing
- Quick-coupler model if fitted
- Bucket width and cutting edge type
