How to Measure Excavator Bucket Pin Dimensions for a Perfect Fit
Why Pin Dimensions Matter
Ordering the wrong excavator bucket is one of the most costly mistakes in equipment procurement. The difference between a perfect fit and a returned order often comes down to three measurements: pin diameter, pin centre distance, and inside ear width. This guide shows you exactly how to take these measurements so you can order with confidence.
The Three Critical Measurements
1. Pin Diameter
Measure the outside diameter of the bucket pin using a caliper or micrometer. Common pin diameters for mini excavators range from 25 mm to 45 mm, while standard excavators typically use 50 mm to 80 mm pins. Record the measurement in millimetres — do not round up or down.
2. Pin Centre Distance (Ear Spacing)
This is the distance between the centre of the dipper-arm pin hole and the centre of the link pin hole. Measure from centre to centre, not from edge to edge. This dimension determines whether the bucket geometry matches your machine’s linkage.
3. Inside Ear Width
Measure the gap between the inside faces of the bucket ears (the mounting lugs). If this dimension does not match your dipper arm width, the bucket will not sit flush. A mismatch here causes uneven wear and potential pin failure.
How to Take Accurate Measurements
- Clean the mounting area — Remove dirt, grease and rust before measuring.
- Use calibrated tools — A steel caliper or micrometer gives reliable results. A tape measure is not accurate enough for pin diameters.
- Measure twice — Take each measurement at two different points and compare. Worn pins may be oval; note the wear direction.
- Photograph the mounting — A clear photo of the dipper-arm end, existing bucket ears, and any coupler helps confirm the connection type.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring pin length instead of pin diameter.
- Confusing coupler dimensions with direct-pin dimensions.
- Using worn pins as reference without noting the wear amount.
- Assuming all buckets from the same manufacturer use the same pin size.
What We Need for a Quote
To provide an accurate bucket quote, we need:
- Machine make, model and serial number
- Pin diameter (mm)
- Pin centre distance (mm)
- Inside ear width (mm)
- Desired bucket width and application (trenching, grading, rock, etc.)
- Photos of the current mounting and any coupler
Send these details to our team and we will confirm fitment before quoting. Every bucket is checked against the machine specifications to prevent mismatch.
